What is autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (autism) is a condition that influences an individual's capacity to connect with their general surroundings. It has wide-running degrees of seriousness and differing qualities. No two autistic people are the same. The term autism spectrum disorder does not only include autism but Asperger’s syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder.

Autism is a disability which is thought to have neurological or genetic causes (or both). It is a neuro developmental disorder. However, the cause of this disability is not yet comprehended. A person with autism may have difficulties in some areas of their development, but their other skills develop naturally.

According to research, males are three times more likely to be affected than females. Autism affects around 1 in 100 to 1 in 110 people of school age. Social communication and interaction; restricted or repetitive behaviors, interests and activities are the two main areas of difficulties autistic people may have.

Communication and social contact for people with autism
Difficulty with communication is often found amongst people with autism. Consequently, they may face difficulty expressing their needs. Some might have good verbal language skills, but others never develop language competency. Even if they do, they may not use appropriate grammar and vocabulary, finding it difficult to frame proper sentences.

People suffering from Autism spectrum disorder may misunderstand words; often misinterpret them or would not understand them anyway. Understanding other people’s feelings and emotions can also be difficult for them. Therefore, they are said to be anti-social and social communication is a tough task for them. Despite lacking interpersonal skill, few people with autism try their level best to be social, but they can’t seem to get it right. There is a lot of scope in the treatment which is available, such as education programs, family support and assessment to gauge the intensity of the issue.
