Learning Difficulties are Genetic

Children with learning disabilities struggle with school work more than their peers. For instance, they may find difficulty in reading, writing and spellings they also get confused while doing math, or have trouble with expressing their thoughts and communicating them. By and large, they need to work more diligently than peers for their achievements in school. Parents often say that homework is an uphill task for their children or they find themselves working with the child each day to attempt to make them understand what they are supposed to do or often helping them complete the given task. The child may appear distracted, especially in school, because they cannot process information like other students. Seldom parents do sense that something is ‘wrong’ and teachers often will affirm or bring to the parent’s attention.

Learning difficulties aren't infectious, but they can be genetic. 30-40% of moderate to severe learning difficulties are caused by changes in the genetic makeup of an individual. That means they can be passed down in children through the genes, like many other qualities we get from our parents and grandparents, learning disorder in children can be passed on naturally.

The cause of a learning difficulty is not known in many cases. Experts believe that the learning difficulties have nothing to do with the sight and hearing of the child, they are perfectly fine, but it is all about the way the child takes in information and as a result how the brain processes that particular information. Specialists have proofs, in the form of scans of children who have actually shown differences in the brains of children who have learning difficulties. But it is also a fact that certain types of learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, can be inherited. Children with learning disabilities often have average or above-average intelligence, therefore learning difficulties in children cannot be considered the same as mental retardation, autism, deafness, blindness, or behavioural disorders.
